Ricky Gunn has just completed an amazing 50 years at Southgate. On 20th September there was a game between a Club XI and an RD Gunn XI where many past and present players and members celebrated Ricky and saw him presented with a cap to mark the occasion.
In a phenomenal playing career Ricky has made 1162 appearances for the club, scoring over 20,000 runs, including 14 centuries, and completed close to 1,000 dismissals as a wicketkeeper. He still plays whenever called upon.
Ricky is well known and very well liked by people of all generations at Southgate and is a great ambassador for the club around Middlesex clubs. Ricky knows everyone and every knows Ricky. Recently he has been a regular player for the county over 50 and 60 teams in recent years.
Ricky has always sought to give back to the club. Over the 50 years he has done just about every job in the club. For 20 years he ran the colts section, bringing through many juniors who are now regulars and still look up to Ricky. He still coaches youngsters and is the club welfare officer. Additionally, Ricky has been the club treasurer for many years and organised the annual dinner. He is also the club statistician and produces an annual report (hence we know the figures quoted above!).
Congratulations to Ricky on the first 50 years. We understand his ambition is to play for another 15 years to go past the oldest Southgate player on record at 86 (can you guess who that was? – certainly within living memory)
